London, UK
Of course London was going to make it onto this list! It is the one destination everyone from around the world wants to visit. It may not be the cheapest European city on this list, but it is definitely one of the most exciting. There are hundreds of things to do and see, much of which are free. Take a relaxing boat trip down the Thames or head to one of the world famous nightclubs. Experience afternoon tea at The Ritz or climb to the top of The Shard. London has it all.

Athens, Greece
Although Greece may be experiencing some tough times economically, their capital city is still a thriving tourist hotspot. The historical buildings here will send shivers down your spine when you think that many are thousands of years old. One of the greatest things about Athens is that you’re not too far from many other Greek vacation destinations. Once you’ve seen the city, hop on a boat to one of the little islands. Soak up some sun on the beach before heading back home.

Istanbul, Turkey
Although technically not a European city, we just had to include it. Turkey is a strange mismatch of European and Asian cultures. Unlike anything you’ll have ever seen before. Try and stay as central as possible to be within walking distance of all the best sights. The cuisine here is some of the best, thanks to the combining of different cultures. Head there in September for temperatures that are still hot, and prices that are more affordable.

Venice, Italy
Stepping away from the capital cities for a moment, this is one destination we couldn’t not add to the list. Although Venice becomes extremely crowded in the summer months, it’s well worth the trip. What could be more peaceful than visiting a city that’s built on water? You’ll be able to see some of the world famous sights, such as the Rialto Bridge. And you get to dine on Italian food. What could be better?!

Dubrovnik, Croatia
There has been a real rise in the number of tourists visiting this stunning Croatian city. And for good reason! Although it may be fairly new on the tourism front, it has plenty to offer the avid traveller. This magnificent walled city is brimming with culture and historic buildings. The weather can get sweltering during mid-summer and beaches are just around the corner. There’s a little bit of everything here.
