Traveling with children isn’t always easy. From the time spent in close quarters to the boredom that comes from being on the road, there seemingly a countless number of reasons why travel and children just don’t seem to mix. Talk About It
One of the reasons that travel is so difficult on children is that they’re not always sure about what’s going on. If you want things to go more smoothly, take some time to talk to your children in a way that makes sense to them. Explain where you are going, why you are going, and what travelling will be like. Sometimes simply having a bit of warning about the experience is all it takes for a child to calm down.
Make a Plan
It’s also a good idea to make a plan for traveling with your kids. This is going to take more than just looking at a good vacation rental – you’ll need to think about how often you should stop to let your kids stretch their legs, whether or not you can find places to eat along the route that your child will like, and exactly how far you can push ahead without making your child miserable. The more planning you do, the better prepared you’ll be for the trip.
Bring Distractions
Distractions are vital on any road trip. Depending on your child’s age, this could mean anything from allowing your child to bring along a coloring book to giving him or her a bit more screen time than normal. At the very least, you should make sure that your child has something to do other than sit and stare out the window – sometimes even letting your child stay in charge of the radio station can mean the difference between a happy child and a ruined experience.
Have Some Patience
Finally, make sure that you have some patience. As difficult as travel can be on an adult, it’s even harder on a child who has less traveling experience on which to fall back. Don’t push yourself quite as hard as you would if you were alone and make sure that you treat your child with a bit of grace if things go wrong.
Traveling with kids can be a great experience once they get used to the process. Make those early trip counts by showing them that travel can be fun. If you’re able to impart a love of travel early on, they’ll take that same attitude into their adult lives.
