In Russia, in the deep Gulf of Finland, on drainage basin of the Neva River is situated Saint Petersburg, once known as Leningrad. The name of the second largest city in Russia has changed three times, from Saint Petersburg to Petrograd, in 1924 to Leningradand in 1991, back to Saint Petersburg.The city was established in 1703 with the need to king Peter I the Great to introduce agrarian Russia in Europe. This place with a population of over four million is often described as the most Western city of Russia, as well as its cultural capital. The town looks magnificent at first glance, it has the architectural magic. Broad avenues, decorated facades of buildings, royal palaces and parks are part from the soul of St. Petersburg. The contrast of luxury and poverty that can be seen on the streets of the city is fascinating.

Magical broad avenues breathe the spirit of past times, while misery and poverty are intertwined with the new imperial splendor. St. Petersburg is home to more than 200 museums and many of them are housed in historic buildings. The largest museum and one of the biggest attractions of the city is Hermitage. It is a former royal residence which holds the largest artistic and archaeological collections in the world. Also, the apartments of the deceased famous people such as Alexander Pushkin, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Nikolai Rimsky – Korsakov are converted into museums.
