Renovating your outdoor space can feel like a daunting task but with the right materials and a bit of determination, it can become a rewarding experience. Just ask Angela, better known as @midmodernmama on Instagram who embarked on a complete DIY deck renovation with her family using Tanzite Stonedecks. What started as a challenging summer project transformed into a beautiful, functional outdoor living space that her family now enjoys.
A Complete DIY Journey
Angela’s deck renovation wasn’t just a standard upgrade; it was a complete overhaul, built from the ground up. “With the exception of the demolition of our old patio, we built our deck from the ground up, so it was a complete DIY experience,” Angela recalls. It was a family affair, involving her husband and 12 year old child, who became an expert at spacing and laying out Tanzite planks. Despite the hot, dry summer weather, the Tanzite installation was one of the easiest parts of the project. “Once we mastered the system, even our 12 year-old was a pro!” she adds.
Overcoming Challenges in Deck Building
Like any DIY project, there were challenges along the way. For Angela, the biggest hurdle was leveling the framing. “Since it was just the three of us and the deck is large at 600 square feet it took longer than it would have for a professional crew,” she explains. The wood quality wasn’t the greatest making it difficult to get the framing level. But with perseverance, a power planer, and a long level, they took their time to correct the frame before starting the Tanzite installation making sure everything was perfectly level because of course stone doesn’t bend or flex.
The Final Result: A Stunning Outdoor Space
After a couple weekends of hard work (with full-time focus for only one of those weeks) Angela’s deck is a spacious, beautiful stone deck entertaining area for her family. With seating areas, a cooking space, and a pergola for shade, the family spends most of their time outdoors enjoying the beauty and functionality of their new deck. “It’s our second living space and honestly, most days, it’s our primary living space!” she says proudly.
Tanzite Stonedecks: The Ideal Choice
Angela chose Tanzite for its durability and ability to withstand Colorado’s extreme weather conditions, including high UV exposure and temperature fluctuations. “I wanted something that would last, be comfortable underfoot, and easy to clean. Tanzite ticked all the boxes and even exceeded my expectations,” she shares. The non scratch, non slip attributes of the Tanzite also help of course!
DIY Tips from @midmodernmama
For anyone considering a DIY deck renovation, Angela has some advice: “Invest in your framing. Use the correct joist spacing, and take the time to get everything level. It will pay off in the end.” By ensuring a strong, level frame, you can guarantee that your Tanzite deck will last for decades.
