With travel restrictions relating to COVID-19 and a global suspension of many air routes, more and more Americans are choosing to vacation at home. And where better to spend an unforgettable week on a private yacht charter than in New England? It’s as if Mother Nature has turned tourism on its head, and is helping us all to re-discover spectacular scenery closer to home.

1. The Hamptons
Our first port of call should not theoretically be classed in our list of New England summer destinations, but this popular New Yorker vacation spot is so accessible and charming that we feel it justifies its place. From The City That Never Sleeps, sail to The Hamptons on Long Island, a veritable summer yachting playground where high society spends long, warm months lounging at the beach and attending glamorous parties.
2. Bar Harbor, Maine
We thoroughly recommend that you discover this quintessential Maine coastal village, perched on the eastern shore of Mount Desert Island. During your stay, be sure to enjoy a feast of Maine lobster – this is an idyllic spot to enjoy Maine’s famous culinary highlight. Nature-lovers should also take a hike in Acadia National Park, with 41,000 acres of glacier carved mountains, valleys, lakes and beaches.
3. Block Island
Another exquisite New England summer destination is Block Island, situated just 12 miles off Rhode Island. Here you will find peace and tranquility in equal measures, as well as stunning beaches, breathtaking views and very few people. Make sure you anchor in Great Salt Pond, a large protected “salt pond” ideal for charter guests wanting to stay the night.
4. Cuttyhunk
This sleepy little Massachusetts island is a delight to discover. For those that don’t know it, Cuttyhunk is the southernmost island of the Elizabeth Islands. Home to approximately 80 people, half of the island is set apart as a nature preserve which is home to a wide variety of birds. It is also home to many oyster beds – foodies must not leave without sampling some raw oysters.
5. Martha’s Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard is one of our most famous New England vacation spots, and for good reason. This idyllic summer haven was once an important commercial center for whaling and fishing. Visit the charming towns of Chilmark, Edgartown, Gay Head, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, and West Tisbury and imagine how high society of yesteryear spent their summers.
6. Nantucket Island
Here you will find endless remote beaches, wonderful wildlife and a true feel of local history, located just 26 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. Nantucket Town was originally a booming whaling port in the late 1700s and most of the 1800s, but when the industry moved to bigger harbors Nantucket slumped into sleepy island life. Thanks to the Nantucket Preservation Society, the island has changed little since. We recommend a visit to the Whaling Museum in downtown Nantucket Town, in amongst exploring charming boutiques and mouth-watering eateries.
7. Newport
Not to be overlooked due to its size is the city of Newport (RI). Famous for its maritime history, Newport is a stunning city with incredible architecture, beaches and the oldest library in America, The Redwood Library. In fact, no other city in America has more restored colonial-era homes and buildings, with 200 being protected by the National Register of Historic Landmarks. Definitely a place for history buffs.
8. Portland
The old seacoast town of Portland is without doubt one of our favourite New England summer destinations. Oozing ambiance this charismatic town in southern Maine boasts a plethora of galleries, boutiques and restaurants for visitors seeking something a bit special. Feel its deep-rooted community spirit pulsating through the streets.
