Generally areas such as Sharm-el-Sheikh, Cairo and Dahab are tourist-friendly with a great selection of hotels, eateries and attractions. The three areas also offer an eclectic mix between them with partying in Sharm, sight-seeing in Cairo and beach life in Dahab. It’s also advisable to book your accommodation and tours with reputable companies. This way you can embrace the intriguing history and visit the Giza Pyramids of Cairo, cruise down the Nile and eye up the architecture of the Citadel and its mosques at ease with a guide and reliable transport.

When out and about it’s also important to dress and behave respectfully. This means women should embrace the culture and cover up with loose, conservative clothing and politely but firmly dismiss any unwanted male attention. It also pays to be firm when shopping at markets. Egyptian prices are always negotiable so don’t be afraid to haggle to avoid being ripped off. This haggling culture is particularly welcome in laid-back Dahab and applies to anything from dinner by the beach to accommodation and scuba diving lessons.

As a whole the Egyptian people are friendly and welcoming to visitors, and the fact that you’re flying solo shouldn’t put you off discovering everything this country has to offer. With plenty to do from quad biking through the desert to visiting The Egyptian Museum and camel safari rides, there’s little reason to wander out of safety and off the beaten track. Appreciate the local way of life and you’ll have a ball.
