It doesn’t matter whether you are about to embark on a five star luxury trip with a loved one or you are off budget backpacking with friends, it’s important to do your research before you go. Sure, there is nothing wrong with a bit of spontaneity and going with the flow but some level of research is usually recommended. This is especially true if you are travelling for the first time and don’t know what to expect, as the entire trip can be an exciting but daunting prospect. Luckily, little things such as knowing what to pack can make a big difference. Here’s what you need to know if you are travelling for the first time.
What You Need to Pack When Travelling
Clothing for All Weathers
Though you may be jetting off to warmer climates, there is no telling what unexpected weather you could be faced with. This is why it’s important to take a range of clothing options, with something for all weathers. If you are heading to somewhere like South East Asia that is warm for most of the year, take a waterproof jacket and suitable shoes for when the rain hits.
Electricals, Batteries and Chargers
You won’t want to miss a moment of your trip, so make sure to pack adequate chargers and batteries for all of your electricals. This includes mobile phones, laptops, cameras and GoPros. Don’t worry too much if you lose or break something, as most places will have shops offering replacement.
Don’t Go Overboard and Stick to Essentials
If you are going away for more than a few weeks, it is very tempting to pack all of your favorite things. However, this will quickly become annoying when you are having to carry it all from A to B. Instead, stick to the essentials and leave room for souvenirs you pick up along the way.
Think About Your Luggage
The type of trip you are planning and where you are going will hugely influence your luggage. For those travelling in five star luxury, a large and roomy suitcase is absolutely fine. For those backpacking and staying in hostels, a compact lightweight backpack is usually better. If you are going to a lot of different destinations or locations off the beaten track, you will need luggage that’s easy to carry.
Recommendations and Reviews
Though you can’t actually pack recommendations and reviews, they are two things you should take with you on any trip. Ask around and see what other people recommend, as there’s only so much information you can get from a guide book. Find out if there are any ‘must visit’ local restaurants or any activities that can’t be missed.
It doesn’t matter whether you are travelling five stars or backpacking, it’s not the end of the world if you forget to pack something. Though you will certainly want to have specific items with you, almost everything can be purchased and replaced on your travels.
